Aston Villa could have little choice but to sell Jacob Ramsey this summer.
According to Football Insider, Premier League side Aston Villa could be forced to part ways with star man Jacob Ramsey in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old came through the ranks at Villa Park, making his senior debut in the second half of the 2018/19 season, the same term where he was awarded the Academy Player of the Season award. That potential does not appear to have been a faux pas as Ramsey has gone on to establish himself in the club’s senior squad.
A midfielder brimming with energy and imagination, he has thrived under Unai Emery. Ramsey has made 21 appearances for the club this season across all competitions, scoring once and assisting two more. He has aided the club in what is fast becoming a campaign that could end with UEFA Champions League football potentially on the table.
A gamble too far?
Aston Villa did not turn into a strong team overnight. In fact, they have been rather liberal in their transfer expenditure in recent windows, strengthening the existing roster multiple-fold. This could come back to bite them as the club attempts to stay within the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Pete O’Rourke now believes that Ramsey could follow Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene out of the club as they attempt to balance the books. Cashing in on the 22-year-old before June 30 will see the club register the fee received as pure profit, giving them breathing space as they try to stay within regulations.
Giving up the identity
While sacrificing Ramsey can be considered an acceptable outcome should Villa push on and grow to greater heights, it is far form a given. The young midfielder is not just a versatile option in the middle of the park but is also someone who is aware of what it means to play for Villa.
Chelsea have in recent times parted ways with several academy products only to discover that those brought in need not always understand what it means to don the jersey. Whether the path ahead will be the same for Aston Villa remains to be seen. For Ramsey, however, he has enough years in his tank to make an impact elsewhere.
