Arsenal prioritising summer move for Viktor Gyokeres

Premier League heavyweights Arsenal are reportedly prioritising a summer move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

According to a report by Football Transfers, Viktor Gyokeres is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are in the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. And they have identified the Sporting CP attacker, whose release clause is worth €100 million, as their top striker target.

The Rise and Rise of Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres has transformed his fortunes since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City in a deal worth €21 million last summer. A graduate of IF Brommapojkarna, the 25-year-old arrived in England in January 2018 by joining Brighton & Hove Albion. But his half-decade stay in the country was fruitful during his spell with Coventry City.

The Swede’s rise in prominence was synonymous with Coventry becoming a stable club again. Several Premier League clubs showed interest in him, but Sporting CP won the race instead. And Gyokeres has been a resounding success at the Portuguese club, amassing 33 goals and 12 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

With Gyokeres becoming a goal machine at Sporting CP, his stock has skyrocketed. Widespread reports have linked the Swedish international with several well-known Premier League clubs. And Arsenal might be his next destination, with the North London club viewing him as the top striker target.

Arsenal Interested

Arsenal’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres is understandable. While Mikel Arteta has two strikers in his squad, neither has been impressive due to their profligacy in the final third. Kai Havertz has stepped up as a centre-forward in the absence of Gabriel Jesus, negating the Brazilian’s influence on the team.

So, Arsenal might benefit from signing a prolific striker, bringing Gyokeres into the picture. The report by Football Transfer claims that the Gunners view the Swede as their top striker target heading into the summer transfer window. But he will not come cheap as his contract with Sporting CP contains a release clause worth €100 million.

Arsenal should have the funds to shell out €100 million and secure Gyokeres’s services. But the 25-year-old has shown an inclination towards joining clubs in other leagues instead of the Premier League, with AC Milan his preferred destination. So, Arsenal might have to look elsewhere to sign a striker this summer.
