Chelsea could sanction the departure of their 24-year-old academy graduate Conor Gallagher before the end of June.
According to a report by Football Insider, Chelsea are ready to sell Conor Gallagher as they seek to improve their financial condition. The Blues were keen on extending his stay at the club but those talks have stalled and the London club are now ready to cash in on him before the end of June.
Despite the 24-year-old being linked with a move away during the last two windows, he continues to be an important player for the Blues under Mauricio Pochettino. He has gone from strength to strength since the start of the season.
Chelsea’s financial situation could result in Gallagher’s exit
With Gallagher’s contract running out in just over a year the London club were looking to offer him a new deal with improved terms. But, those talks have now stalled because of their financial circumstances.
Chelsea’s 2022-23 accounts revealed that the club suffered losses of £90.1 million last year with £121.4 million lost throughout 2021-22. Premier League’s financial rules state that a top-flight club can only lose up to £105 million over three years.
If they go beyond that mark, they will face a points deduction. The Blues are way over the limit at this stage and the only way out is by improving their 2023-24 financial accounts. As a result, the London club are now expected to make a few sales before the 30 June deadline.
They are looking to offload Gallagher. He is an academy graduate and his departure will be listed as pure profit. Selling him before the deadline will help them improve their 2023-24 financial accounts helping them avoid any unnecessary penalty.
Spurs keen on Gallagher’s signatures
While he has surely been one of their best players this term, the Blues don’t really have many options to play with. They are willing to let go of the 24-year-old who is on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar. The North London club have been monitoring him for a while now.
Spurs are quite serious about their pursuit of his signature. They have tried to sign him in the past and are expected to return for him in the summer. He will be an ideal fit in Ange Postecoglou’s system and they could benefit from Chelsea’s financial situation.
