La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid are reportedly hopeful of signing 33-year-old Barcelona utility man Marcos Alonso this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Marcos Alonso is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are in the market for a left-back heading into the summer transfer window. And they are optimistic about signing the 33-year-old Barcelona utility man later this year.

The Marcos Alonso Journey

Marcos Alonso has been a polarising figure in the last half a dozen years. A graduate of Real Madrid’s fabled La Fabrica division, he could not establish a foothold at the famous Spanish club and rose in prominence during his stint with Fiorentina. That earned him a move to Chelsea, where he spent six years before leaving the West London club as a free agent.

The Spaniard returned to his homeland by joining Barcelona on a free transfer on Deadline Day of the 2022 summer transfer window. Since then, the 33-year-old has been a handy utility man for the Blaugrana, playing as a centre-back and a left-back.

The veteran featured regularly for Barcelona last term but has endured a frustrating 2023/24 campaign. The Spanish international has managed only 299 minutes of game time across seven appearances, spending most of the season thus far on the sidelines due to a back issue. Nonetheless, Marcos Alonso remains high in demand heading into the summer transfer window.

Atletico Madrid Want Alonso This Summer

The Barcelona utility man is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid, with talks already underway. And Los Rojiblancos’ interest in Alonso is understandable, with Reinildo Mandava being the only recognised left-back in Diego Simeone’s squad.

Atletico Madrid loaned Javi Galan out to Real Sociedad in the January transfer window. So, the Spaniard might not have a long-term future at the Civitas Metropolitano. Marcos Alonso has thus emerged as a viable short-term option for Atletico Madrid. And the Colchoneros are hopeful of landing the 33-year-old Barcelona utility man.

The Spaniard has entered the final six months of his contract and will likely leave Barcelona as a free agent in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if Atletico Madrid can seal an agreement to secure his services later this year.
