Manchester United are leading the race for the signatures of the 24-year-old Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

According to a report by Football Transfers, Manchester United are keen on bolstering their defence in the near future, and the Red Devils have their eyes set on Matthijs de Ligt. The 24-year-old centre-back is unsettled at Bayern Munich and could look to make a move in the summer.

De Ligt was already a star during his teenage, as the Dutch international led his childhood club Ajax to the semi-final of the Champions League while he was just 19. It was a team full of future superstars, and he was their leader.

Mathijs de Ligt’s Situation at Bayern Munich: Lack of Game Time and Unsettled Status

The 24-year-old joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 after a three-year spell at Juventus. While the first season did go according to plan, things have taken a turn of late. The former Ajax skipper has fallen down the pecking order at the German club.

Their manager Thomas Tuchel has preferred having Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae in the heart of their defence so far. De Ligt has had less than 900 minutes of first-team action this term. In their recent 3-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, Eric Dier started ahead of the Dutch international, who was an unused substitute.

The lack of game time has frustrated the 24-year-old, who is now unsettled in Munich. He is not happy with his current role at the club and could consider making a move elsewhere to be the preferred choice in defence.

Matthijs de Ligt’s Potential Move: Manchester United’s Pursuit

Manchester United are one of the clubs who have genuine interest in the Bayern defender. They have already contacted the Dutchman’s representatives on multiple occasions. They even attempted to sign him back in 2019 before he joined Juventus.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of defensive reinforcement. They have struggled as a defensive unit in the ongoing season because of injuries. Erik ten Hag wants to ensure he has enough depth and quality in his ranks to take the next step.

The Manchester United boss has worked with De Ligt during his time at Ajax and would love to have him in his ranks at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are not the only ones interested, with even Arsenal are keen on his signatures.

The Gunners have internally discussed the idea of signing the 24-year-old to bolster their defence. But, they are yet to initiate any sort of contact with the player or the club. While the North London club are interested in him, the report suggests that Manchester United are the ones leading the race for his signatures.
