West Ham United were reportedly keen on signing 25-year-old Ismaila Sarr from Ligue 1 club Marseille on deadline day.

A report from Give Me Sport has claimed that West Ham United made a late move to sign Senegalese forward Ismaila Sarr from Ligue 1 club Marseille on deadline day. But they failed to secure an agreement.

Dean Jones has revealed that West Ham were hoping to sign the player on a straight loan deal, but the French club were not keen. The Senegal international has scored four goals and picked up two assists across all competitions this season. He could have been a useful acquisition for the Hammers.

The 25-year-old is versatile enough to operate anywhere across the front three, and he could have been the ideal squad player for the Hammers. Sarr has played in the Premier League before with Watford, and he could have settled in quickly and made an immediate impact at West Ham.

The Hammers are currently pushing for European qualification next season, and they need to finish the season strongly. The attack is an area that is in need of reinforcements, and Sarr would have been a quality acquisition.

The opportunity to return to the Premier League could have been a tempting proposition for the attacker. West Ham would have been able to offer him European football as well. Letting the player leave on loan midway through the season does not make sense especially when he is playing regularly for Marseille.

It is fair to assume that West Ham could have signed him if they had come forward with a substantial cash offer. The Hammers did manage to improve their midfield with the addition of Kalvin Phillips on loan.

It will be interesting to see if they can perform at a high level until the end of the season and secure Europa League qualification for the next season. They managed to win the UEFA Europa Conference League last term, and they are currently competing in the Europa League.

Winning another European trophy this season would be a tremendous achievement for West Ham United. There is no doubt that they have a quality squad, and they will have to be consistent in the coming months.

    What a mess!
West Ham leaves the transfer window in an embarrising way. Why can`t they behave like adults,
and stick to agreements reached with other clubs and players?
