West Ham United defender Maxwel Cornet has been linked with the move away from the London club and Crystal Palace were keen on securing his services this month.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace have now abandoned their pursuit of 27-year-old West Ham United wide man Maxwel Cornet, and it seems that he will have to stay at the London club until the end of the season at the very least.
Cornet has struggled for regular game time at West Ham United since joining the East London club from Burnley. The 27-year-old has started just one Premier League game this season, and he needs to play more often at this stage of his career.
The West Ham wide man is versatile enough to operate as a full-back as well as a winger. He was expected to establish himself as a key player for the Hammers when he joined the club from Burnley. However, he has not been able to earn the trust of David Moyes, and he has not been given ample opportunities as a result of that. He was brought in as the ideal long-term replacement for Aaron Cresswell, who is in the twilight stages of his career.
A move to Crystal Palace would have been ideal for the 27-year-old defender this month, and regular football at Selhurst Park would have allowed him to get his career back on track. He has shown his quality in the Premier League in the past with Burnley, and there is no doubt that he is good enough to start for Palace regularly. He needs to join a club where he will get ample opportunities and the trust of the manager.
The player would have fancied a move during the January transfer window, and he will be disappointed to have failed to secure an exit. It will be interesting to see if he can work hard in training and force his way into West Ham’s first team plans in the coming weeks. The Hammers are competing in Europe this season and they could certainly use extra depth in the side.
