Arsenal goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson has been linked with a move to Copenhagen.
According to Arsenal’s official website, Runar Alex Runarsson had six months left on his contract with the North London club and the Gunners have decided to terminate his contract so that he can move on.
Meanwhile, FC Copenhagen are hoping to sign a goalkeeper today, and they are keen on the Icelandic shot-stopper as per English journalist Simon Collings. The 28-year-old has not had opportunities at the North London club, and hewas on loan at Cardiff City in the first half of the 2023/24 season.
With David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale at the club, he does not have a future at Arsenal. So, it was ideal for him to move on before the window closes. His contract was due to expire in the summer anyway. So, Arsenal have decided to terminate his deal. They are ready to cut their losses on the Icelandic international and let him leave permanently.
A move to Copenhagen could be an interesting opportunity for the 28-year-old goalkeeper. Copenhagen are through to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and Runarsson will certainly relish the opportunity to compete in Europe with them. It would be a major step up for him from the Championship, where he was plying his trade.
The 28-year-old could be a useful addition for Copenhagen, and he will hope to establish himself as a regular starter for them. The transfer to Arsenal has clearly not worked out for him, and the two parties needed to go their separate ways now. Arsenal have plenty of quality and depth at their disposal as far as the goalkeeping unit is concerned.
They will be hoping to get rid of their fringe players in the coming months and free up the wage bill. It will be interesting to see if Copenhagen can secure the services of the 28-year-old goalkeeper on a free transfer before the winter window closes later tonight. In terms of incomings, it seems unlikely that Arsenal will be able to bring in players to strengthen their squad for the second half of the campaign.
