Lyon could plot a late move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who could seek an exit from Tottenham for regular playing time ahead of the Euros.

According to L’Equipe, Lyon could position themselves to make a late move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before the transfer window deadline. The 28-year-old is keen to play regularly ahead of the Euros, which could force him to consider a move away from Tottenham.

Lyon keen on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg?

The French giants have fallen off a cliff with their dismal performances this season but are actively addressing many issues using the transfer window. Lyon have been one of the more active clubs this month, considering many other sides have kept quiet owing to FFP problems.

One thing the club wanted was excellent strength in midfield, and they have already completed a move for veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic. They now intend to pair the Serbian with Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before the window shuts.

The window is a short one between now and the end of the month, as Lyon are keen on making an offer for Hojbjerg to leave Tottenham. The North Londoners could stick to their massive valuation for the midfielder but could come under pressure if the 28-year-old forces the issue and seeks a departure.

The French giants could ideally try for a loan move, but Tottenham would likely insist on a permanent transfer on their terms and price point. If the 28-year-old pressurises the Spurs hierarchy, then he could get a temporary switch and then look forward to a permanent solution in the summer, either to Lyon or elsewhere.

Does Hojbjerg wish to leave Tottenham?

As things stand, the 28-year-old Dane has played 20 times, with only five of those coming as starts. Despite being a regular starter for Tottenham since his arrival, he has lost his place this season since Ange Postecoglou took over, who tends to prefer Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma as his midfield pairing.

Hojbjerg has played somewhat regularly this month owing to the aforementioned pair’s participation at the ongoing AFCON. However, once they return from the continental tournament, the Danish star could see himself relegated to the bench again. He does want to play regularly to feature in Denmark’s Euro squad, as a move to Lyon or elsewhere would benefit him in that regard.

Moreover, Rodrigo Bentacur’s return to fitness severely threatens Hojbjerg’s playtime between now and the end of the campaign. Spurs have only the Premier League to focus on after being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions. This could also make the 28-year-old think about his immediate future and the amount of game time he gets in north London.
