Barcelona have failed in their attempt to acquire the services of Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on loan.

According to a report by The Independent, Barcelona are keen on reinforcing their midfield in the ongoing transfer window, but they do not have the best of financial situations. As a result, they were looking to bring in Giovani Lo Celso on loan. However, their bid has been rejected by Tottenham Hotspur.

Giovani Lo Celso and his Tottenham Travails

Lo Celso was considered to be a huge prospect for the future when Spurs signed him back in the summer of 2019. The North London club forked out €60 million to sign him from Real Betis. Unfortunately, he has not lived up to the lofty expectations.

The 27-year-old has been subject to multiple loan moves since and of late, he has been a regular squad player for Spurs. He has only had 514 minutes on the pitch in his 12 appearances but has contributed towards four goals. While he might not be a first-team regular, the Argentine is still happy playing under Ange Postecoglou.

However, he could have played for Barcelona in the second half of the season if the Catalan giants had succeeded in their attempt to sign Lo Celso on loan. Xavi is in desperate need of a new midfielder to cope with the loss of Gavi, who is out injured and won’t return in the ongoing season.

Barcelona Want a Midfielder

While the Blaugrana want a new midfielder, they have a limited budget to work it. As a result, they decided to bring in someone on a short loan. First, they failed to strike a deal with Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips, who will soon join West Ham United. And now, Barcelona have failed to land Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso.

As per the report, the Catalan giants made low-ball offers, which is the reason why they have not managed to strike a deal. Barcelona are nowhere close to what Tottenham are looking for in terms of sharing the wages and the terms of the deal.

Since they have not managed to meet the expectations of Tottenham, Barcelona will now have to look elsewhere to reinforce their midfield and end the season on a high.
