Newcastle United have reportedly made a “surprising” decision on the future of Kieran Trippier after the experienced right-back was targeted by Bayern Munich for a transfer in the January window.
Bayern Munich have been told to bid up if they want to secure the services of England international Trippier, with a request for a straight loan deal was knocked back out of hand by Newcastle. The Magpies aren’t interested in any type of deal that rids them of Trippier’s services on a temporary basis, but they would be willing to listen to offers to sell him for a figure close to €15 million, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Newcastle’s January transfer plans have been hampered by their ongoing Financial Fair Play concerns, and it has been indicated that they may be forced to offload players before they can bring anyone in.
Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, and Alexander Isak have understandably been picked out as two sellable assets who could move elsewhere in the coming months, while Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron have also been linked with a shock exit this month.
There’s also been lots of rumours suggesting that Trippier could be on his way out of the club amid strong interest from Bayern Munich as Newcastle looks to move on as soon as possible to avoid selling one of their star performers in the summer.
Trippier’s Newcastle contract runs until June 2025 and is a key player for Eddie Howe, who does not want to lose the 33-year-old. He was the first arrival of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund era, joining from Atletico Madrid for £12 million in January 2022.
And fair to say, he’s been a transformational signing, helping them steer away from relegation in his debut season and secure a Champions League spot last term.
With three goals and 18 assists to his name in 81 appearances, he has overall been a brilliant signing, but his form has dipped this season. The 33-year-old had been expected to finish his career at St. James’ Park, but he has now emerged as a surprise target for the Bavarians’ as they attempt to sign a new right-back.
The 33-year-old himself is reportedly ready to quit the Magpies and head to Bavaria to join his former Tottenham Hotspur team-mates Harry Kane and Eric Dier. He is said to be eager on the prospect of starting over in Germany after Thomas Tuchel identified him as a priority transfer target.
Having said that, Trippier has not kicked up a fuss or pushed for an exit yet and will be part of the squad for Newcastle’s FA Cup trip to Fulham this Saturday unless Bayern get their act together and put the money on the table.
