Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a late move to sign Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori during the January transfer window.
According to transfer journalist Dean Jones (via GIVEMESPORT), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori and could make a late play to secure his services in the January transfer window.
Tottenham Active in the Italian Market
Spurs have had significant success fishing in the Italian market in the last couple of years or so, thanks in large part to Fabio Paratici’s influence. The likes of Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin have arrived from Serie A this season, while Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and Rodrigo Bentancur all made the move from Italy to Tottenham.
The Lilywhites more recently signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa for €31 million, including add-ons, and the Romanian international has already made his debut as a substitute in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Manchester United.
Dragusin is expected to compete with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for a starting spot in North London. But if recent reports are anything to go by, they are now looking at another Serie A defender to add even more competition across Ange Postecoglou’s backline.
Riccardo Calafiori in Sight
Calafiori joined Bologna from Swiss outfit FC Basel last summer for a meagre €4 million and signed a contract until June 2027. He has been ever-present for the Rossoblu this term, racking up 17 appearances in Serie A.
He has impressed under the guidance of Thiago Motta, operating as a left-sided centre-back more than a left-back, which was his primary position prior to his move to Italy. The Italy Under-21 international has been viewed as a huge talent for a few years now, and he could get himself a big move sooner rather than later.
The 21-year-old’s versatility is of particular interest to Postecoglou, who is actively poaching young, up-and-coming talent to build a strong squad for the future. Having said that, Bologna, who are battling it out for a European spot in Serie A, have understandably no intention of selling their key star this month. So, the summer may be a better time to strike a deal with them.
