Newcastle United have set sights on Khephren Thuram as a potential replacement for Joelinton, who could depart in the summer.

According to HITC, Newcastle United are drawing plans to replace Joelinton, with OGC Nice’s Khephren Thuram emerging as a target. The Magpies and the Brazilian have had a contract stand-off, with the Frenchman seen as a candidate alongside several other names.

Newcastle United eye Khephren Thuram

Khephren Thuram was pencilled in to leave OGC Nice last summer, but the Ligue 1 side kept hold of the midfielder in the hope of selling him later for a better price. There are already rumours of a move this month, but so far, things have looked quiet on that front.

A host of Premier League clubs have maintained an interest in the 22-year-old Ligue 1 star, with Manchester United and Liverpool among those who are keen. Thuram remains open to a new challenge from Nice, but things are looking complicated midway through the season, especially the price tag he may carry.

Hence, a summer move seems far more likely for the 22-year-old Ligue 1 star, with Newcastle United the latest to join the chase. The Magpies have set sights on the French midfielder as a potential replacement option for 27-year-old Joelinton, who might leave in the summer.

Thuram fits the profile of a player Eddie Howe might consider as a replacement for Joelinton, although there are other names on their list, too. Atalanta’s Ederson remains a target, along with Manu Kone and Amadou Onana. Among all those mentions, barring Ederson, Thuram might probably carry a lower price tag.

Joelinton to leave Newcastle United?

As per some reports, Joelinton’s recent injury could see him miss the remainder of the season, thus adding to Howe’s woes for the campaign. However, there’s another problem emerging in the background with the Brazilians’ contract situation.

Newcastle United were eager to hand him a new deal, but Joelinton’s substantial wage demands have stalled talks for the time being. The two parties are too far apart in their expectations, and with 18 months left on his current deal, the Magpies might cash in on him next summer.

The club are keen on keeping hold of the 27-year-old, although they will opt to sell if they cannot find an agreement between now and the summer. Hence, the likes of Thuram have come into the picture as a potential replacement option for Joelinton, as there are some tricky times ahead for the Magpies.
