Arsenal have been linked with a £22 million move for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral during the January transfer window, but major financial roadblock could scupper the transfer.
Arsenal are considering signing former Real Madrid forward Borja Mayoral from Getafe during the January transfer window. However, the Gunners may not have the financial capability to strike a deal with Getafe, according to transfer insider Dean Jones (via GIVEMESPORT).
Jones told GMS, “The links to Mayoral are being shot down from every angle, and that’s not a major surprise to me because even at £22m, I think he might be out of reach as things stand. There seems to be a struggle for people to fully grasp that Arsenal don’t have the resources to make bids for players like this, but it is the case. I’m not ruling out the idea of any business this month, but they have very little wiggle room financially, and there is no negotiation around signing Mayoral.”
Arsenal Need Some Inspiration
The Gunners have struggled for form in the past month, only winning one of their last seven matches in all competitions and losing three matches on the spin, including two at home. By far their biggest issue is a lack of goals, with current strikers Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah having just eight goals between them in the Premier League.
That has seen Arsenal explore a move for a new striker in the January window. Ivan Toney is thought to be the Gunners’ top target. But with Brentford holding out for as much as £100 million for his services and Victor Osimhen valued at a similar amount by Napoli, cheaper options have been considered as the North Londoners are somewhat limited by financial fair play rules after a big splurge in the summer.
Borja Mayoral on Arsenal Radar
Reports earlier this week have claimed the Gunners have launched a bid of £22 million for 26-year-old Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, an offer knocked back by Getafe, who are holding out for £39 million for his services. The Spaniard has scored 12 goals in 18 La Liga appearances (14 across all competitions), with only Jude Bellingham outscoring him in the Spanish top flight this season.
The problem is Financial Fair Play concerns, which have forced sporting director Edu Gaspar and manager Mikel Arteta to cut their cloth in terms of their transfer wish list this winter.
It is unlikely we will see the Gunners splash a large amount of cash this month due to the club’s need to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, as per Jones. The transfer expert has not ruled out the prospect of Arsenal doing any business in the ongoing window but has rubbished any negotiations about signing Mayoral.
