Tottenham Hotspur have already set their sights on a third signing in the ongoing January transfer window and are eyeing a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
According to a report from Fla Web in Brazil, Tottenham are “keeping an eye” on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, and the Lilywhites’ “are signalling that they will make an investment in him very soon.”
Wolves captured Joao Gomes from Flamengo for £15 million in January last year, and the 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength since then. The Brazilian enforcer has become an integral part of Gary O’Neil’s midfield, forming an indispensable partnership with Mario Lemina in the engine room.
He is a regular fixture on the team sheet and has missed just two games all season in the Premier League. And his performances have seen him attract interest from one of the Premier League’s big guns.
Gomes has landed on Tottenham’s radar as Ange Postecoglu attempts to bolster his midfield. So far this month, Spurs’ have strengthened their squad by bringing in former Chelsea flop Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig and Radu Dragusin on a permanent deal from Genoa. However, there could be yet more reinforcements on their agenda.
Tottenham entered the January transfer window with three targets in mind: a versatile attacker, a backup centre-back, and a midfielder. Werner and Dragusin have ticked the first two boxes, and if a report from Fla Web in Brazil is to be believed, Spurs have a new midfielder on their mind, with both starters Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr currently out on AFCON duty.
Given their FFP restrictions, it is believed that Wolves could need to sell some of their players before they can buy. However, the Molineux outfit have now made it clear they will not let Gomes’ leave for anything less than €35 million, as they will have to pay a hefty 10 percent of the transfer fee they receive to Flamengo due to a sell-on clause that was inserted when they signed him 12 months ago.
Gomes’ current contract at Wolves does not expire until the summer of 2028. The Black Country outfit also have the option to extend that by another year as well.
The 22-year-old has impressed with his incredible energy, tackling, ground coverage, ball-winning qualities, and dynamism in midfield, while also playing an important role in his team’s possession play. It will be interesting to see if Spurs can land his signature by the end of the January transfer window.
