Manchester United and Aston Villa are fighting it out for Jonathan David

According to Football Transfers, Premier League duo Manchester United and Aston Villa are keeping close tabs on LOSC Lille star Jonathan David in the ongoing January transfer window.

The Jonathan David Story

The Canadian international is one of the best players in Ligue 1, scoring bucket-loads of goals and crafting opportunities for his teammates. Just 23, David is well experienced for club and country and is a player who is ready to take the next step in his career.

This is good news for both Aston Villa and Manchester United, both of whom are in the market for a goalscorer. David has netted 10 goals and made six assists in 24 games across all competitions for Lille this season. He found the back of the net 24 times in Ligue 1 in 2022/23, a tally bettered only by Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette.

Jonathan David in Demand

David is seeking a move, which has put several teams on high alert. Manchester United, for one, have struggled to score goals this season and following the struggles of Rasmus Hojlund, could do with reinforcements. They scouted David last summer as an alternative for Harry Kane but ultimately ended up with neither.

Goals win matches, and Erik ten Hag could do with a player of David’s abilities. His excellent awareness and ball-playing abilities could inspire Manchester United to a strong finish to the current season. However, with Hojlund present, the Canadian is not guaranteed a starting spot, and it remains to be seen if he is ready for such a challenge.

The 23-year-old might find life at Villa Park easier to come by. Ollie Watkins is the club’s lone senior striker and can be pulled to the left to accommodate David upfront. Unai Emery’s men have emerged as surprise title challengers this season, and bringing in the right players in January could help them sustain that challenge.

INEOS are familiar with Ligue 1 and will be very aware of Jonathan David’s potential. Whether this will see them splash the cash to make the Canadian international their marquee signing this month remains to be seen.
