Premier League side Chelsea are reportedly seriously considering an imminent move for Roma star Paulo Dybala, who has a bargain release clause in his contract.
According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Chelsea are stepping up their interest in Argentine attacker Paulo Dybala and are weighing whether to trigger the €12 million release clause in his Roma contract.
Despite Sunday’s 4-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Preston North End, his third win in a row across all competitions, and the impressive scoring form of Cole Palmer, Mauricio Pochettino isn’t satisfied with the firepower he has at his disposal, with Nicolas Jackson struggling to impress since his summer arrival from Villarreal, while Mykhailo Mudryk has largely flattered to deceive.
Moreover, Christopher Nkunku has only just returned following knee surgery in the summer, while Armando Broja has netted only twice in 15 outings this term.
And the Blues’ are now contemplating reviving their interest in long-time target Dybala, having earmarked the Argentina international as an ideal target to provide a creative spark and incision to their attack. The west London outfit are studying the situation of how they should attempt to bring Dybala to Stamford Bridge, which could become concrete talk sooner rather than later.
The Argentine maestro is currently in the second year of his contract with Jose Mourinho’s Roma, which expires in the summer of 2025, but crucially, his deal contains an unusual release clause, which has been an open secret for a long time now.
Dybala’s release clause, which stands at €12 million for clubs outside Italy, is only valid until January 15, so the clock is ticking for Pochettino and co. to make their move.
It has been widely reported that if a foreign club (non-Italian) activates Dybala’s release clause, the decision will be entirely up to the player, whereas Roma would still have a vote if one of their Serie A rivals tabled a €12 million offer.
Keeping his shoddy injury track record aside, the prospect of securing a player of Dybala’s calibre and experience for the aforementioned price doesn’t come around often in modern football.
Known for his creative flair and ball-striking ability, he could well be the missing piece in Chelsea’s attacking jigsaw, while he could significantly bolster their attacking options. His tally of 18 goals in his debut season at Roma speaks volumes about the goal threat that he brings with him, while he has an impressive 12 goal contributions from 17 appearances this term.
Chelsea have started to look more deeply into Dybala’s predicament, laying the groundwork for a frantic week of events over his future, or maybe an intense transfer battle should rival suitors decide to join the race.
