Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of 21-year-old full-back Ian Maatsen.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea’s 21-year-old defensive sensation Ian Maatsen is all set to complete a loan transfer to Borussia Dortmund in the ongoing transfer window. Both parties have a verbal agreement in place, and the player is set to undergo his medical tomorrow. An official confirmation of the transfer is expected to arrive in the near future.
Ian Maatsen and his Chelsea Frustrations
Maatsen was promoted to the Chelsea first team ahead of the ongoing season. His impressive performances in the 2022/23 season while out on loan at Burnley might have earned him a promotion. But he is still way down the pecking order.
The 21-year-old has not had much game time in the ongoing season. While he has been involved in 15 matches, he has only racked up 378 minutes. Lack of regular first-team action could hinder his growth. As a result, the player has been keen on making a move away from the club.
While reports earlier suggested that Chelsea were ready to sell him, in reality, the Blues have no intention of parting ways with the 21-year-old on a permanent basis. They feel he could be an important first-team player in the years to come. As a result, the Blues wanted to send him out on a short loan.
Another Loan Spell Beckons
Borussia Dortmund have been interested in the services of the Dutchman for a while now. The Bundesliga club do not have much depth in the left-back slot, with Ramy Bensebani their only proper left-sided full-back.
As a result, Borussia Dortmund were keen on adding Maatsen to their ranks and have succeeded in doing so. Both clubs have agreed on a loan transfer. There is a verbal agreement in place between the two clubs, salary structure and other details have already been discussed.
The 21-year-old will travel to Germany on Tuesday, and his medical will take place on Wednesday. Maatsen had already agreed to the move days back and if everything goes according to plan, he will be announced as a Dortmund player this week.
