West Ham United are keen on acquiring the services of the 26-year-old Ajax skipper Steven Bergwijn this month.
According to the report by The Sun, West Ham United want to bolster their attack in the ongoing transfer window, and they have their eyes set on Steven Bergwijn. The Hammers are ready to offer him an opportunity to return to England, after having failed to get going during his stint in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.
The Steven Bergwijn Story
Bergwijn came up the ranks at PSV Eindhoven and made it to their first team in the summer of 2015. He went from strength to strength over the next five years before joining Spurs in the winter of 2020. His 18-month-long stint at Tottenham did not go to plan, and he returned to the Netherlands with Ajax.
He has been in sensational form since returning and is currently their club captain. In the ongoing season, he has 11 goal contributions in his 20 outings, and his impressive performances have caught the attention of West Ham United, who want to bolster their squad.
West Ham United Eyeing Steven Bergwijn Swoop
With Lucas Paqueta injured and Mohammed Kudus away with Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations, the Hammers are in desperate need of more firepower up top. As a result, they want to sign the former Tottenham winger and have already established initial contact with the player’s representatives.
While they have started making moves, a lot still needs to be done before a transfer can take place. The Hammers had spent heavily during the summer. They might have sold Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million but ended up signing four players for £117.5 million. As a result, they need to sanction a few departures before making a move for the 26-year-old.
The Dutch international still has over three years left on his deal with Ajax and given his importance to the team, they are unlikely to let the 26-year-old leave on with ease. They are unlikely to accept any loan deal irrespective of a buy option or an obligation. As a result, West Ham need to raise significant funds before making a move for Bergwijn’s services.
