Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on the signing of Timo Werner, who has been a target for Manchester United.
According to Football Insider, Timo Werner will undergo his Tottenham medical on Sunday. Despite links with Manchester United, the German international is now closing in on a move to the North London club.
Timo Werner: Not Having the Ideal Second Coming at RB Leipzig
Timo Werner has had a mediocre season with RB Leipzig so far, and he will be eager to bounce back strongly during the second half of the season as we approach the UEFA Euro 2024. He has scored just twice this season.
Spurs need to bring in attacking reinforcements, and the German international should prove to be a useful acquisition. If he can regain his form and sharpness, the 27-year-old will certainly improve Tottenham going forward.
He is versatile enough to operate as a winger as well as a centre forward. He has played in the Premier League before with Chelsea and knows the league well. Werner will be expected to settle in quickly and make an immediate impact.
Tottenham prefer versatile attackers under Ange Postecoglou, and the 27-year-old certainly fits the profile. The North London club have an attacking approach, and it is fair to assume that their style of play could benefit Werner.
The German international was heavily linked with the move to Manchester United in recent weeks as well. The Red Devils need to bring in a quality striker to support Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund. The former Chelsea striker would have been a useful addition to their attack.
But with Werner close to joining Tottenham, and it remains to be seen whether Manchester United move on to other targets after missing out on him. Tottenham will have an option to sign the player permanently at the end of his loan spell for a fee of around £30 million.
If Werner manages to impress in the Premier League during the second half of the season, the reported asking price could seem like a bargain. The German international won the UEFA Champions League during his previous spell in England, and Spurs will hope he can guide them to a trophy this season. The FA Cup will be their best chance of winning silverware this term.
