Manchester United are eager to offer Raphael Varane a new contract that would see the 30-year-old take home a lower wage.

According to 90 Min, Manchester United could offer Raphael Varane a new contract but with a lower wage. The 30-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, but there are no indications that the Frenchman will want an exit in the current window or the next.

Manchester United’s new contract for Raphael Varane

Manchester United attempted an indifferent approach with contract talks in the summer with David De Gea by offering him a new deal with reduced terms. The Spaniard was one of the highest-paid stars at Old Trafford, but the new proposal consisted of a massive wage cut.

De Gea was reportedly open to signing it but eventually ended up leaving the club as a free agent. Now, Manchester United are attempting something similar with Raphael Varane, with the 30-year-old’s current deal expiring in the summer.

The Red Devils had the option of triggering a 12-month extension but refused to take it up. Instead, they are keen to offer him a new deal on reduced wages to balance their act. Whether the Frenchman accepts it is another question, as there are plenty of clubs chasing his signature.

Manchester United will probably take this proposal to Varane with the same approach they had for De Gea. Hence, it’s a chance for the 30-year-old to remain at the club but on reduced terms or leave for free with the hope of finding a high-paying suitor.

Raphael Varane’s future at Manchester United

Varane has had a mixed season with the club, with Erik ten Hag dropping the World Cup winner for a prolonged period. He has since returned to the fold with flying colours, as the manager could place his trust in him once more.

However, with his contract situation, Manchester United could risk losing him on the free. Bayern Munich are already plotting a move this month, and they might consider signing him as a free agent in the summer. Varane reportedly wants to finish his career at one of the three clubs he’s played, thus ruling out a move to Saudi Arabia.

With Real Madrid being one of the three clubs in that mix, the Spanish giants have no interest in re-signing the 30-year-old despite their injury problems at the back. Hence, Varane has a big decision on his hands to either sign the new contract at Manchester United or risk finding a club that may suit his financial needs.
