Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, but the Reds’ are believed to not be keen to sell the player.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur have identified Joe Gomez as a transfer target to bolster their backline this January, but they fear that Liverpool will be reluctant to offload the player due to the recent injury suffered by Kostas Tsimikas.
After a mid-season slump caused by a succession of injuries to key players and bans, Ange Postecoglou’s side have returned to form and will be seeking a fourth consecutive win against Brighton on Thursday. Postecoglou was forced to deploy a makeshift central defensive pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, with out-of-favour Eric Dier as back-up at Manchester City at the start of the month.
As a result, Postecoglou has made no secret of his desire to bolster his defensive options in January, knowing that another setback would be disastrous for his team’s top-four aspirations. Unfortunately, another setback has indeed stuck with the Lilywhites, with World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero picking up a hamstring injury that will likely keep him out for the next four to five weeks.
Spurs were already monitoring centre-back transfer targets this winter before the Romero injury to add more depth behind him and summer recruit Micky van de Ven, who has also been out with an injury. This latest knock could push Tottenham into making a move, with Liverpool’s earmarked Gomez as a potential January transfer target.
Searing recovery pace, Premier League proven with versatility to play across the back four, and homegrown status, it’s easy to see why Tottenham may consider Gomez a solid option.
Gomez, whose current contract is set to expire in June 2027, is considering a move away from Anfield in search of more prominence. However, Liverpool are not ready to offload their utility defender midway through the season.
Many fans and pundits alike downplayed Gomez after his struggles last season, believing his injury struggles have taken a toll. However, the 26-year-old centre-back has been a key asset of Liverpool’s squad this season, and Jurgen Klopp has deployed him in both right-back and left-back roles in several games.
With left-back duo Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas both injured, Liverpool have to keep Gomez fit and available until the other left-backs return from their injuries.
With Joel Matip also out injured and his long-term future hanging in the balance, Liverpool are now unlikely to let a player with that kind of flexibility leave the club. Tottenham will have to turn their radar elsewhere, with Liverpool set to rebuff their intentions to entice Gomez away from Anfield.
