Manchester United front-runners to sign Joao Neves

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing 19-year-old Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves from Benfica.

Joao Neves has been a key performer for Benfica, and Manchester United are keen on signing him. A report by O Jogo via Sport Witness has claimed that the Red Devils are now front-runners to secure his signature.

Joao Neves in Demand

The Portuguese midfield prospect has been linked with Manchester City as well. Neves has a €120 million release clause in his contract with Benfica, and the Portuguese outfit are under no pressure to sell him for less.

Manchester United will need to pay over the odds in order to sign him. It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils are willing to shell out that much for an unproven talent. While Neves has been outstanding for Benfica in domestic football, he has yet to showcase his abilities consistently at the highest level.

Although he might end up justifying the outlay in the long run, he is clearly not worth €120 million now. In addition, Benfica are in talks with his agent Jorge Mendes to extend his contract and increase the release clause to €150 million. Such a move would definitely ward off any suitors.

How Will Neves Fit At Manchester United?

Neves is a talented young player with enormous potential. He could be an important first-team player for the Red Devils if he can adapt to English football.  Manchester United need someone like him in the midfield to control the tempo of the game.

He would be a superb long-term investment for the English club as well, but Benfica will have to be more reasonable with their demands. A move to England is likely to be a tempting option for the player as well.

Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and they could provide him with the platform to showcase his talent. Furthermore, Erik ten Hag could help him develop as a player as well. The Dutchman has done well to nurture young players at Ajax.

Joao Neves could be the ideal partner for someone like Casemiro in the middle of the park. It remains to be seen whether Manchester United decide to make their move for him next month. For now, they are the front-runners to secure his services.
