Manchester United are reportedly in talks to renew the contract of 29-year-old Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.
According to Fabrizio Romano via Give Me Sport, Manchester United are in talks with Victor Lindelof regarding a contract extension. The Swedish international has started ten Premier League matches this season, and it will be interesting to see if he is ready to commit his long term future to the club.
According to Romano, Manchester United view Lindelof as an important member of the first team in the present and the future. The Swede has been a useful squad player for Manchester United since joining the club from Benfica in a £30 million deal.
“With Lindelof, 100%. They want Lindelof to be part of the project in the present and future, so I’m sure they will try to proceed as soon as possible. At the moment, a new deal for Wan-Bissaka is still being discussed because they wanted to offer him a long-term contract and not just trigger the option.
“It is similar to what they did with Diogo Dalot less than a year ago. They had a chance to trigger the option, but they decided to offer him a longer contract. The conversations are ongoing with Wan-Bissaka.”
With Lisandro Martinez sidelined, he is likely to play more often in the coming months. So, it will not be surprising if the Swedish international decides to sign an extension with the club. He is certainly good enough to play for Manchester United, and it will be interesting to see if he can impress in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will look to agree on a new contract with Aaron Wan-Bissaka as well. Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane have been linked with exits from the club in recent weeks.
They will need more quality and depth in the back four and must hold onto players like Lindelof to put together a quality squad. The 29-year-old will probably hope to play more often in the coming seasons, and it remains to be seen whether he demands game-time assurances before putting pen to paper on a new deal.
Manchester United will hope to compete for major trophies in the coming seasons, and they need a deeper squad. Rival clubs like Manchester City have tremendous squad depth, and Manchester United will have to match up to them. Holding on to players like Lindelof could prove to be a wise decision. The 29-year-old is at the peak of his powers right now, and he will be hungry to prove himself as a starter for the Red Devils.
