Tottenham have held talks with Jean-Clair Rodibo’s agents to further advance in their quest to sign the 23-year-old defender.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have held talks with Jean-Clair Todibo’s agents as they are keen to push ahead with the defender in January. Spurs face plenty of competition for the 23-year-old OGC Nice star, with Newcastle United and Manchester United in the mix.
Tottenham are planning a vital transfer window ahead of next month, with Ange Postecoglou highlighting some key requirements for his squad. Spurs had found themselves in a good place on the table, but injuries and suspensions to their players have derailed a potential title challenge.
As the January window approaches, the squad has some gaping holes, especially with quality in depth. Postecoglou will prioritise a defender over other positions, although they are also keen on a versatile forward and probably a midfielder, depending on the conditions.
On the centre-back issue, they lack depth, which got exposed since the severe injury to Micky van de Ven. Cristian Romero has constantly walked a tightrope with suspensions, while Eric Dier and Ben Davies may have gone past their best.
Hence, signing someone to compete with Van de Ven and Romero would make perfect sense for Postecoglou as he looks for a quality star. Benfica’s Morato remains a target, but there are heavy links to OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.
Tottenham recently joined the race for the 23-year-old Frenchman alongside Newcastle United and Manchester United. The former also face depth issues with central defenders, while the latter are somewhat favourites to sign the defender.
Tottenham are actively looking for an upper hand as they held talks with Todibo’s agent to advance their chase. OGC Nice values the 23-year-old at £35 million as it could ask questions of Spurs and their ability to spend significantly on a new centre-back.
Manchester United have maintained their interest in him, and could have the upper hand in the chase as Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club. Hence, Tottenham may have to come up with good money to sign the Frenchman, as the race appears open now.
Newcastle United could also make a concerted effort, as Eddie Howe needs a player of Todibo’s quality in his squad. However, Tottenham could appeal to the player and showcase their recent project under Postecoglou as a big point to convince the 23-year-old.
