Manchester United are keen on Real Madrid star David Alaba ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window

Manchester United are expected to be active when the summer 2024 transfer window rolls in and Real Madrid star David Alaba is a player on their radar.

The Red Devils have turned to the Santiago Bernabeu to plug their gaps in recent years with both Casemiro and Raphael Varane boosting the midfield and defence with their experience and ability. While both have been reasonable successes, neither can be classified as a runaway hit.

This does not, however, appear to dissuade the Old Trafford faithful from a third raid of the Real Madrid sister. Alaba was a superstar at Bayern Munich and little has changed since he moved to the Spanish giants in 2021. Having already won it all with Los Blancos, he could very well embark upon a new challenge.

At 31, the Austrian is not young but still has a few years left in him at the top level. Real are not averse to selling their veteran star and have placed an asking price of €60 million for his services. As things stand, his deal at the Bernabeu expires in 2026 and as of yet, there is no talk of an extension being offered.

United lack the presence of leaders in their roster and with the futures of several players in the air, there will be gaps for the club to fill next summer. Alaba has also started to put in inconsistent performances, more or less convincing the Real board that he can be considered expendable for the right price.

While Alaba would certainly aid United as they aim to rebuild their identity and balance, it can be argued that the Red Devils would be better off not investing big money in a player whose powers are on the wane. Spending money has not been the issue at Old Trafford, but rather who they splash it on. Alaba certainly is a star of the past and could struggle at this age to thrive in the physically competent Premier League setup.

According to Fichajes, Juventus and Al-Ittihad are also in the fray for the Austrian. While Alaba would do well to replace Varane at Old Trafford, the Red Devils are far off from competing for top honours. Whether Alaba would be willing to take what is relatively a step down in the final years of his career remains to be seen.

Sounds like a deal United would have completed a few months ago, but hopefully one that Radcliffe will veto.
A lot of money, and high wages no doubt, for a player on the wain
