Liverpool set to prioritise signing a centre-back in January

Liverpool are looking to improve their squad during the January transfer window, and they will prioritise the signing of a centre-back.

A report from Football Insider that claimed that Liverpool are looking to sign a central defender in January, especially after the injury blow to Joel Matip. The Cameroonian centre-back has been ruled out for the entirety of the season with ACL rupture.

Liverpool are now left with Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as the only reliable defenders until the end of the season. It is evident that they will have to sign another central defender and it remains to be seen who they end up signing. They have been linked with the number of players in recent weeks.

Liverpool certainly have the financial resources to sign a quality defender.

They have started the season well and they are currently second in the league table. Liverpool will be hoping to push for the Premier League title and they need quality additions in order for that to happen.

Signing a central defender in January would allow Liverpool to rotate players like Konate and Van Dijk. At the moment, all three fit defenders at the club have enough workload on their plate and they will need more respite in the coming months. In addition to that, the likes of Konate and Gomez have a worrying injury record.

Liverpool cannot afford to put them under too much pressure if they want the players to stay fit for the key matches.

In addition to a central defender, Liverpool should look to invest in a defensive midfielder as well. They failed to sign a quality defensive midfielder in summer and they should look to try their luck in January now.

A quality defensive midfielder would not only help them improve at the back, but he would also allow creative midfielders like Alexis Mac Allister to operate with more freedom.

Clubs like Manchester City have not been at their best this season and Liverpool will feel that this is a good opportunity for them to push for the title and win the trophy. They must look to get their transfer business spot on during the January window in order to beat the likes of Arsenal to the title.
