David de Gea is open to the idea of joining Newcastle United as they could push for a new goalkeeper following Nick Pope’s injury.
According to a report by Daily Telegraph, David de Gea is interested in joining Newcastle United. The 33-year-old shot-stopper has been a free agent since parting ways with Manchester United before the start of the ongoing season. And, he could return to the Premier League with the Magpies.
Eddie Howe’s team suffered a huge blow in their 1-0 win over Manchester United as their number one Nick Pope picked up a shoulder injury. The 31-year-old is all set to undergo surgery and is expected to be out for the next four to five months.
The Magpies do have Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius to cope with his absence. And, Howe is expected to give Dubravka a chance to prove himself until the end of the year. Newcastle United have seven fixtures in December, and the 34-year-old will be analysed on the basis of his performances in those matches.
If he fails to live up to the expectations and Newcastle struggle on the defensive front, they will push for a new shot-stopper. The Magpies have already started looking for a new goalkeeper who can perform at a high level on a consistent basis, and they feel David de Gea could be a great fit for the club. He has a lot of experience of playing in the Premier League and on top of that, he will be available for free.
De Gea parted ways with Manchester United last summer. He was their go-to man in goal for over a decade and had featured in close to 550 matches for the Red Devils. There was an option to extend his £375,000-a-week contract by another year but they decided against it.
Manchester United offered him a new deal with reduced terms, and the player was not ready to accept such a proposal. So, he left the club after his contract ran out. The 33-year-old has since been a free agent, and there is interest in his services from across Europe as well as from the Saudi Pro League.
But, the Magpies could end up acquiring his services. While the Spaniard was initially reluctant to return to the Premier League, the reports suggest David de Gea is open to the idea of joining Newcastle United.
