Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Japanese defender Koki Machida, valued at €15 million by Union Saint-Gilloise.

A report from Voetbal Primeur has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur will have to pay €15 million to sign 26-year-old Union Saint-Gilloise defender in the January transfer window.

Tottenham are lacking in depth in the defensive department, and they need to sign quality players when the transfer window opens in a few weeks. Koki Machida has proven himself with Union SG, and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for the North London club as well.

The Japanese defender could be the ideal replacement for Eric Dier, who is expected to leave Tottenham next year. That 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he needs to move on in search of regular game time.

Machida will be tempted to join a big club like Tottenham, and the opportunity to showcase his ability in the Premier League will be an attractive option for him. The 26-year-old has proven his quality with Union SG and is certainly good enough to do well in the Premier League as well. He could help Tottenham improve defensively and finish the season strongly.

Tottenham have crashed to three league defeats in a row after an impressive start to the season. They will need to bring in the right players to finish the season strongly and secure UEFA Champions League qualification.

Koki Machida seems like a quality option on paper, and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham decide to sign him. The reported asking price is quite affordable, and Tottenham certainly have the financial means to get the deal done. The transfer could prove to be a bargain if the 26-year-old defender manages to adapt to the Premier League quickly.

Tottenham currently have Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven as the only reliable central defenders at the club. Ashley Phillips is too young to make the desired impact in the Premier League right now. So, signing another senior central defender should be a top priority for the Premier League side when the transfer window reopens in January.
