Tottenham prioritising Ivan Toney swoop

Tottenham are reportedly ready to prioritise a move for Ivan Toney ahead of January as Ange Postecoglou searches for a top-draw striker.

According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham could prioritise a move for Ivan Toney in January. The Brentford star remains open to leaving for a bigger challenge and has the attention of several top London-based clubs, with Spurs also in the mix now.

Ivan Toney was unfortunate to have been given the 8-month ban from football as he wanted to end a brilliant season on a positive note. He had only made it to the England squad before the verdict, and now there are doubts whether he might get the nod once he returns to action.

His ban ends on January 16, and after that, Brentford will hope to count on him at least until the end of the season. Toney could push for a move amid heavy interest from some of the bigger Premier League sides, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Chelsea are already keen on pushing for a move, but the likes of Arsenal could have a bigger say in this race. Now the London dup are joined by Tottenham, who reportedly consider the 27-year-old Premier League forward a priority target in January.

Ange Postecoglou remains keen to add a prolific striker to his setup and has considered a few solid options in the build-up to January. Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez remains a target, while there were rumblings about a potential approach for Victor Osimhen.

Some quarters have suggested Osimhen remains a possibility, but realistically, they might prefer a Premier League experienced forward. Nobody in the current market fits that bill better than Toney, who scored 20 times last season.

Despite his ban, clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea are open to signing him. Even if Tottenham are serious about adding him, they must find a way past Brentford’s humungous asking price. Some reports suggested the Bees could demand as much as £100 million, which these sides will consider unrealistic owing to many factors.

Yet, signing someone like Toney would guarantee Tottenham plenty of goals. Spurs will aim to maintain their grip in the title race, and if they are in a healthy position in January, the 27-year-old Premier League forward will undoubtedly boost their chances of winning the title.
