Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara is reportedly mulling over moving to Serie A amid fresh interest from Juventus and Inter Milan.

According to Calciomercato.it, Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan and Juventus are both interested in a free transfer for Thiago Alcantara, who is expected to bid farewell to Liverpool when his deal runs out in 2024.

Thiago Alcantara’s arrival from Bayern Munich in 2020 raised concerns about his suitability for Jurgen Klopp’s counter-pressing system. And while the 32-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in his playmaking, he has been plagued by a raft of fitness concerns since joining the Reds.

When fit, the 46-cap Spanish international has proven to be a handy first-team player for Liverpool, netting three goals and setting up six more in 97 games while winning the EFL Cup, FA Cup, and Community Shield, as well as collecting a Champions League runners-up medal.

The ex-Barcelona lynchpin is yet to play a minute of football for the Reds this season following a pair of setbacks in his recovery, having undergone surgery on a hip issue over the summer. Jurgen Klopp recently admitted that he does not expect Thiago to return before the New Year.

The 46-time capped Spanish international survived Liverpool’s summer midfield shake-up that saw all of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita leaving the building. But he is not part of Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans at Anfield, with the Reds signing four new players for the middle of the park this past summer.

Liverpool are very unlikely to offer Thiago a new deal, and that could pave the way for the Spaniard to move to Italy as a free agent. Despite his fitness problems, Thiago is not expected to be short of offers when he leaves Liverpool, and Inter Milan and Juventus are ready to battle it out for his signature.

The Spain international is said to be open to trying his hand in Italian football, and Juventus’s need for reinforcements in the engine room are well documented, having lost Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli to bans for different reasons.

Signing Thiago will be a shrewd move for Juve because he is a very experienced player who has been at the top level for a long time and has world-class ability on the ball. As for Inter, they snapped up Kristjan Asllani, Davy Klaassen, and Davide Frattesi to strengthen their midfield ranks for the 2023/24 season.

However, veteran playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s current deal expires in 2024, while Nicolo Barella continues to be linked with a big-money move away from the club next summer amid interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
