Tottenham have advantage over Chelsea in Marcus Edwards chase

Tottenham Hotspur are ahead of Chelsea in the race for the signatures of 24-year-old Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards.

According to Correio da Manhã via SportWitness, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are both keen on having Marcus Edwards in their ranks. The 24-year-old is putting in some impressive performances of late for Sporting CP and the two London clubs are looking to bring him back to England.

Edwards was a part of Tottenham Hotspur since his childhood days. He came up the ranks at the club but failed to break into their first team. He parted ways with Spurs and joined Vitória Guimarães SC in the summer of 2019.

After proving himself at Vitoria, the England youth international joined Sporting CP in the winter of 2022. And, he has gone from strength to strength since.

The 24-year-old right-winger has featured in a total of 80 matches and has contributed towards 38 goals. He has been a consistent performer for the Portuguese club. In the ongoing season, he has been involved in 14 matches and has contributed towards six goals.

Apart from his goal contributions, his overall play has improved significantly. Despite having a contract until the summer of 2026, Edwards is expected to be on the move in 2024.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are both interested in the 24-year-old. The Blues are looking to add more firepower in attack and they have been keeping a close eye on Edwards of late. He is still young and could be a great acquisition for them.

Meanwhile, Spurs are also keen on having him in their ranks. Tottenham are looking to buy him back and they feel is ready to help their cause in the English top flight. They do have an advantage in the race to his services.

Spurs still have a 25% sell-on clause in the 24-year-old’s contract. As a result, if they end up re-signing him, they will have a significant discount. Meanwhile, Sporting are well aware of the amount of interest in him. They are keen on agreeing new terms with Edwards to raise his release clause from €60 million to €80 million.

It will be interesting to see if they manage to strike a new deal with him and where he ends up playing him football next season.
