Liverpool are showing an interest in Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup as Jurgen Klopp searches for a new No.6 in the new window.
According to Merseyside publication Anfield Watch, Liverpool have added Morten Fredruop to their list of new midfielders ahead of the January window. The Merseysiders are in search of a new No.6 ahead of January, with Jurgen Klopp set to add further to his summer revamp.
Liverpool spent over £145 million on new midfield talent during the summer window after an exodus of the club during the close season. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho left for a new adventure in the Saudi Pro League, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all departed on a free transfer.
Jurgen Klopp did not envisage the exit of the former duo to Saudi, which put tremendous pressure on his shoulders to bring in reinforcements. Liverpool practically spent the entirety of the window looking at different midfield solutions, especially in the role Fabinho and Henderson had vacated.
Alexis Mac Allister has started in the No.6 role at the base of Liverpool’s midfield for most parts, with fellow summer arrival Wataru Endo his likely backup in that tole. The latter, 30, is not considered a long-term solution by the Merseysiders and instead was signed with a stop-gap objective.
Klopp continues to search for a much younger alternative to the Japanese international, with Liverpool are set to make further changes. Those could also see experienced star Thiago Alcantara leave for free when his contract expires next summer, as he’s yet to play a single minute this term owing to a recovery from an injury.
Fluminense star Andre remains a target, but with a host of clubs also chasing the Brazilian, Liverpool might also keep alternatives in mind. The Merseysiders remain in contact with the midfielder, and now they will step up their interest after his stellar showing in the Copa Libertadores Final against Boca Juniors.
They have also sent scouts to observe Andre further but remain with an open mind in case they cannot prise him away. Meanwhile, they have added Genoa’s 22-year-old Serie A ace Morten Frendrup to their list of potential targets after the Danish star began life in the top flight in an impressive manner.
Frendrup has already racked up three assists and made the most tackles in Serie A this season. Genoa would see to the idea of keeping him at least until the summer, but interested sides could tempt them with an offer in January.
The Italians do not envisage keeping him for the long term and expect to see the 22-year-old Serie A ace leave at some stage. Liverpool have not approached yet, but with further considerations, it may not be far too long before an enquiry knocks on Genoa’s doors.
In that No.6 role, Frendrup may not have the quality yet to start regularly for a club like Liverpool, but he can grow there. For now, Mac Allister will continue in that role, as Klopp would like to bring someone he can rotate the Argentine with while also fielding the former Brighton star in a more advanced role in certain games.
