Nico Williams, a target for Arsenal and Liverpool, is intrigued by the Aston Villa project, but his suitors need to convince him to leave Athletic Club.
According to Dean Jones on Give Me Sport, Nico Williams is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen on signing the Spanish international, currently on a deal worth £60,000 per week. Meanwhile, the Athletic Club winger is intrigued by Unai Emery’s project at Villa Park.
Nico Williams has established himself as one of the best young wingers in the world in the last few years. The 21-year-old was not an exceptional talent during his days in age-group football. But, a part of Athletic Club for over a decade, he has finally come into his own since breaking into the Basque giants’ first-team squad.
Meanwhile, Williams has also established a foothold in the Spanish national side, becoming a regular under Luis de la Fuente. The youngster has started the 2023/24 season well, providing four assists in seven appearances thus far. His progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa.
Arsenal recently joined the race to secure Williams’s services, running the rule over him. The Gunners do not need a first-choice wide attacker. But with Mikel Arteta preferring to have two top-class options for every position, the Spaniard can arrive at the Emirates to compete with Bukayo Saka.
As for Liverpool, they might need to delve into the market for a wide attacker amid uncertainties surrounding Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian international faces an uncertain future at Anfield amid links with Saudi Pro League clubs. Williams has thus emerged as a viable target for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa wanted to sign Williams in the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise. But Unai Emery remains interested in the Spanish international, whose £60,000-a-week wages do not faze him. In addition, Aston Villa will happily double his salary. Meanwhile, Dean Jones has told GMS that the 21-year-old is “intrigued by” the Villa project.
But recent reports have claimed that Williams has advanced talks over a new contract with Athletic Club. Jones has also suggested that convincing the Spaniard to leave the Basque outfit is the challenge for his suitors. So, it will be interesting to see if Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, and others can tempt him next year.
