Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly still interested in signing Ko Itakura from Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach.
A report from Give Me Sport has claimed that Tottenham remain keen on 26-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach defender Ko Itakura. Spurs were linked with the Japanese international during the summer transfer window as well, but a move did not materialise. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham decide to make a move for him during the January transfer window.
Dean Jones said, “Ko Itakura has traits that have also impressed members of the recruitment team with his performances for Borussia Monchengladbach and while an offer does not seem imminent, he will be monitored when he returns from injury.”
It is no secret that Tottenham need to bring in defensive reinforcements, and the 26-year-old could prove to be a solid acquisition. Itakura has proven himself in the Bundesliga, and he is certainly good enough to play in the Premier League as well. He could be a solid utility option for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian manager needs more options so that he can rotate Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. Both players have been exceptional for Tottenham this season, helping the North London side remain on top of the league table and stay unbeaten so far this season.
However, Tottenham could lose players like Eric Dier during the January transfer window, and they will need to add more depth to the defensive unit. Itakura should prove to be a useful acquisition if Tottenham can get the deal done. The North London club certainly have the resources to secure the Japanese international defender’s signature in the coming months.
The opportunity to play in the Premier League could prove to be an exciting option for the defender, and he will certainly be tempted to complete the move. He has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past as well.

Tottenham also signed Ashley Phillips during the summer transfer window, and Itakura could be a backup option to Romero and van de Ven along with Phillips in the coming seasons. Spurs have started the season well and will look to get back into the UEFA Champions League. Signing players like Itakura in January will certainly improve their squad and help them sustain their current run of form.
