Newcastle United will have to fork out £40 million if they want to acquire the services of Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are keen on having Scott McTominay in their ranks. The Magpies are looking to reinforce their midfield in the winter transfer window with Sandro Tonali banned for the next ten months.

The Magpies did a wonder job in the 2022-23 season as they finished inside the top four in the Premier League and secured a spot in the Champions League. Post that, they went in search of a star midfielder and signed Tonali from AC Milan in a big-money move.

The former Milan midfielder got off to a dream start to life in England. But, things have taken a major turn and he has received a lengthy ban. The 23-year-old was involved in illegal betting during his days in Milan and he has now been handed a 10-month-long ban.

The Italian international will take no further part in the ongoing season and he won’t even feature in next year’s Euro in Germany. Tonali’s absence means the Magpies need to bring in a replacement as soon as possible if they want to finish inside the top four once again.

The Magpies have started to look for options and have already shortlisted a few players. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay is one of the names on their list. They were interested in him during the summer but didn’t make any moves.

However, they could go harder this time around. The Red Devils have already signed multiple midfielders and McTominay has gone down the pecking order. But, he has been used by Erik ten Hag of late because of injuries and poor form of some of their players.

While Ten Hag would love to keep him at the club in order to have sufficient depth, the report suggests that United would be happy to let him leave for a fee of £40 million. With United willing to sell, the Magpies can surely strike a deal for his services. But, it will be interesting to see if McTominay is ready to part ways with the childhood club.
