Fluminense interested in re-signing Thiago Silva

Brazilian side Fluminense are reportedly interested in re-signing veteran Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.

Chelsea star Thiago Silva is nearing the end of his long and distinguished career but could be afforded one final chapter by his former club Fluminense. That is according to a report by Football Insider.

The Brazilian international is 39 but is still going strong at Stamford Bridge. Despite not being picked by the South American nation for this month’s international, Silva continues to impress and is the leader at the back for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

The Chelsea defender might have lost his pace, but his keen understanding of the game helps him snuff out danger and deal with pacier opponents with ease. His powers are on the wane, but there is still in the tank for 2-3 more seasons at the top level.

According to Football Insider, Fluminense are keen to sign the player when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024. He signed an extension last year, and it would appear that the 2023/24 campaign is his swansong in Blue.

The Blues are keen to bring in young blood and appear ready to part ways with Silva. He only joined the Blues in 2020 but has quickly established himself as a fan favourite. Having spent the majority of his career in Europe, the Brazilian could welcome the chance to return home for his swansong.

It will be in familiar surroundings as Fluminense is the club where Silva got his youth career off to a start. He moved on after just two years but returned in 2006 on loan before making the deal permanent the next year. Silva spent two more years at Fluminense and made a total of 82 appearances while scoring nine goals and assisting four more.

Fluminense have been after their prodigal son for some time now and it would appear that the summer of 2024 is when their patience will bear fruit. A return to Brazil will be a hero’s homecoming of sorts for a player who is a native of Rio De Janeiro.

Silva is one of the finest defenders of his generation and will go down in history as a legend at numerous clubs. He will hope that the stint at Chelsea ends with silverware before he embarks upon his South American swansong.
