Newcastle United and Everton are interested in the services of 27-year-old Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
According to a report by The Mirror, Newcastle United and Everton are keen on having Kalvin Phillips in their ranks. The 27-year-old hasn’t had the best of times since joining Manchester City and he could look for a move elsewhere in the winter transfer window to keep himself in contention for England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Phillips came through the ranks at Leeds United and made it to their first team back in the summer of 2015. He played a big part in helping them make it to the Premier League. The 27-year-old went from strength to strength after helping Leeds gain promotion.
He was putting in impressive shifts for Leeds in the English top flight and his performances didn’t go unnoticed. The Manchester City midfielder was rewarded with a national call up and he has been a regular feature in their squad over the past few years.
In the summer of 2022, Pep Guardiola’s team went hard managed to acquire the services of Phillips for £45 million. The 27-year-old was expected to take the next step in his career under the Spanish boss. However, things haven’t gone according to plan.
He has rarely featured for the treble winners over the past 18 months. All he has managed so far are 26 first-team appearances, the majority of which have come off the bench. 21 of his appearances came last season but he was on the pitch for less than 600 minutes.
Things haven’t improved in the 2023-24 season. He has featured in five games and has been on the pitch for less than 200 minutes. Over the last 18 months, he has only made two starts in the English top flight.
While things were not going his way, he was expected to feature during Rodri’s recent three-match suspension. However, Guardiola ended up using full-back Rico Lewis in the centre of the park. As a result, Phillips doesn’t seem to be a part of the Spanish manager’s plans.
Lack of game time is a big concern for him as he does not want to miss out on the Euro 2024. While Gareth Southgate has maintained his faith in the 27-year-old, things could change if doesn’t get enough football this season.
As a result, he could make a move in the winter transfer window. And, there are quite a few top clubs monitoring his situation at the Manchester-based club.
Newcastle United and Everton have been linked with the former Leeds midfielder. The Magpies would love to add another world-class midfielder to the mix. His arrival will give them more depth and he will most likely be available for a cut price.
Meanwhile, Everton haven’t been at their best for a while now. They do not have much quality in their ranks and Phillips would surely provide them with a lot of stability. However, it won’t be easy to land him at the club with Newcastle interested in his services.
