Manchester City are ready to cash in on English midfielder Kalvin Phillips next January
According to 90min, Premier League champions Manchester City are ready to part ways with midfield star Kalvin Phillips in the upcoming 2024 January transfer window.
The 27-year-old came through the ranks at Leeds United before moving to The Etihad in the summer of 2022. However, he has struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s first XI and is more of a flop than a hit.
Phillips was linked with an exit earlier this summer but ended up staying put in Manchester. He has made four appearances for City across all competitions this season but hasn’t quite stood out.
Rodri is the English champions’ first-choice enforcer when available. The fact that Phillips has not staked a claim of his own when the Spaniard was unavailable speaks volumes of his prospects standing at the club.
Guardiola’s side have already lost two of their opening eight Premier League games this season. The January transfer window gives Guardiola and Co an opportunity to fix it.
Phillips cost Manchester City a rather significant £42 million but it is now fair to say that he has been a flop. The time is now rife for all sides to seek a new chapter.
Manchester City are eyeing Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich and selling Phillips will open up a spot and also finances that can aid them in the pursuit of the German. The Die Roten ace is someone Guardiola should be familiar with from his time at the Allianz Arena.
Arsenal and Liverpool have in recent times been linked with a move for Phillips. The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and could do with a new start elsewhere. Manchester City have not shown an aversion to selling players to Arsenal in recent years, but it remains to be seen if they retain the stance following the Gunners’ rise to title challengers.
Phillips can do with regular game time as we draw close to next summer’s European championships. Despite Gareth Southgate continuing to pick him, a lack of regular football could see him fall down the pecking order in the coming months.
