West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing 19-year-old English centre-back Charlie Hughes from Wigan Athletic.

A report from The Sun has claimed that West Ham United are interested in 19-year-old Wigan Athletic defender Charlie Hughes.

The Hammers have sent scouts to watch the defender in League One, and they have been impressed with his performances. West Ham are not the only club looking at the talented young defender. And several other Premier League clubs are thought to be monitoring his situation.

The Wigan Athletic defender has previously spent time with clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool as well. The talented young defender is highly rated in England, and West Ham would do well to secure his services. The 19-year-old could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for the Hammers.

He has already made ten appearances for Wigan in League One this season while captaining the side twice as well. The 19-year-old is clearly highly rated at Wigan, and it remains to be seen whether the League One outfit are prepared to sanction his departure midway through the season.

West Ham need to add more quality and depth to their defence and Hughes could prove to be a solid, long-term acquisition. He could develop into a quality Premier League defender in the near future.

Meanwhile, West Ham are competing in the Europa League this season, and they need a deeper squad to do well across multiple competitions. Signing the 19-year-old centre-back will allow David Moyes to rotate his quad better, especially in the cup competitions.

The 19-year-old might not be ready for the Premier League yet, but he has the ability to adapt to the role of a squad player for now. He has plenty of room for development and he could end up saving millions in the transfer market for West Ham if he manages to fulfil his potential in the coming seasons.

Also, it is fair to assume that West Ham will be able to sign him for a reasonable price. A League One defender is unlikely to cost a premium and the transfer could end up proving to be a bargain in the end.
