Xavi Hernandez has reportedly given the green light for Barcelona to re-sign 22-year-old Spanish defensive midfielder Sergi Altimira.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sergi Altimira is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are considering re-signing the 22-year-old defensive midfielder. And Xavi Hernandez has given the green light to bring the youngster back from Real Betis next year.
Sergi Altimira is a native of Cardedeu and began his youth career at his hometown club. But he spent most of his formative years with Barcelona after joining La Masia in 2012. The Spaniard rose through the ranks at the Catalan outfit but turned professional at CE Sabadell after moving to the Catalan team in July 2019.
But Altimira’s breakthrough came in the 2021/22 season, and he gradually grew in stature at CE Sabadell. The 22-year-old then finally established a foothold in La Liga by joining Real Betis this past summer. While the youngster is not a regular yet for the Andalusian club, he has made his mark in his three outings.
Altimira’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of his former club Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are combing the market for a young holding midfielder. And the Spanish defensive midfielder has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona.
While the 22-year-old has yet to stamp his authority in La Liga, he has shown much promise in the last few years. So, it makes sense for Barcelona to re-sign him in a transfer window in 2024. Altimira’s return can also give the Blaugrana the opportunity to sell him for a profit amid the never-ending financial woes.
Altimira is not the only defensive midfielder on Barcelona’s radar. Recent reports have also linked the reigning La Liga champions with Andrey Santos, Gabriel Moscardo, and others. But the Spaniard has the backing of Xavi Hernandez, who has given the green light to re-sign him.
It will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old Spanish midfielder becomes a top target for Barcelona to bolster the midfield unit. For now, Xavi has approved the move to re-sign Altimira in 2024.
