Newcastle United are in a hurry to extend the contract of Fabian Schar, especially after a stunning night at St. James’ Park.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are set to intensify their efforts to extend the contract of Fabian Schar. The 31-year-old centre-back has proven his worth under Eddie Howe and remains an integral part of the English manager’s plans.

Eddie Howe will forever be grateful to Rafael Benitez for his wisdom and vision in signing Fabian Schar. The Spaniard then paid a £3 million fee to Deportivo La Coruna for the 77-cap Swiss international, and he has proved his worth at every step of the way.

In the early days of the Saudi-based takeover, Schar felt like someone destined to leave, but instead, Howe has changed his fortunes. Keeping the 31-year-old’s experience into account, the manager chose to install the Swiss star as his mainstay at the back.

The addition of Sven Botman in the summer of 2022 brought about renewed resilience to the Newcastle backline. They finished the season as one of the meanest defensive sides in the Premier League. By the end of the campaign, the Magpies seemed prepared to open talks with Schar over a new deal.

The 31-year-old’s current contract ends when the current season concludes. Newcastle United are a bit worried about Saudi interest in the defender. The experienced star seems like a perfect signing for the Saudi Pro League clubs, something the Magpies want to avoid.

Earlier in September, reports emerged about Newcastle United progressing in talks with Schar. There’s optimism about agreeing on a new deal. Now, after a stellar performance against PSG at St. James’ Park, the Magpies are more than convinced about handing the 31-year-old a new contract.

Schar put in a magnificent performance to pocket some of PSG’s high-profile attackers, including strike duo Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani. He capped off with a late goal as Newcastle United beat the French side with a 4-1 scoreline.

Those mature performances could come with more regularity as the season progresses on all fronts. Hence, Newcastle United are keen to ramp up their efforts to renew his deal at the earliest. Not only do they want to reward the 31-year-old for his performances and protect a great asset to the club.
