Chelsea are reportedly trying to re-sign Tammy Abraham in a swap deal involving beleaguered Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.
Romelu Lukaku does not have a future at Stamford Bridge, and he is expected to leave Chelsea permanently at the end of the season. According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea are now exploring a swap deal to bring Tammy Abraham to the club and Lukaku could be used as a part of the transfer.
Widespread reports have suggested that Chelsea have a £68 million buyback clause to re-sign Tammy Abraham. But it remains to be seen whether the West London club can execute a swap deal for him with AS Roma.
Abraham has proven to be a useful acquisition for Roma, and he managed to score 27 goals in his debut season with the Italian club. He has not been able to scale such lofty heights since then, but his performances have been reasonably good.
The opportunity to return to his boyhood club could be an attractive option for Abraham, and he could be excited about the idea of returning. Meanwhile, Lukaku has proven his quality in Serie A in the past with Inter Milan, and he has done reasonably well with Roma so far. It will be interesting to see if the Giallorossi decide to sign permanently and let go of Abraham in the coming months.
A move in January seems unlikely. So, Chelsea might have to wait until the summer transfer window in order to execute the move. Swap deals are often difficult to execute, and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds.
Chelsea definitely need to sign a quality striker, and Abraham could be a useful acquisition for them. He knows the Premier League well and could make an instant impact. Furthermore, the deal would see them get rid of Romelu Lukaku permanently as well.
The Belgian’s return to Stamford bridge has not worked out as expected, and the transfer has proven to be a major flop. Both parties will be delighted to go their separate ways. Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson in the summer, but they need more quality and depth in the attack. Abraham could partner him in the attack if Chelsea can sign him in the coming months.
