José Mourinho’s AS Roma are interested in acquiring the services of 29-year-old Tottenham Hotspur utility man Eric Dier.
According to a report by Calciomercato, AS Roma are keen on bolstering their defence in the winter transfer window and they have their eyes set on Eric Dier. The 29-year-old defender is surplus to requirements at Tottenham and he is expected to be on the move in January.
Dier has been at Spurs since joining them back in the summer of 2014 after coming through the ranks at Sporting CP. He has featured in a total of 360 matches so far and has contributed towards 25 goals as well.
Initially, he started off in the centre of the park but over the past few seasons, he has been used as a centre-back. Last season he featured in a total of 42 games and was on the pitch for over 3,600 minutes.
The 29-year-old was an important part of their first team until last season. He was also a part of their leadership group. But, a lot has changed since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.
The England international has gone down the pecking order under the Australian manager. He is not a major part of Postecoglou’s plans. Dier is yet to feature for the club and with his contract running out in less than 12 months’ time, they will most likely look to offload him in the winter.
Spurs wanted to get him off their books in the summer but they couldn’t strike a deal with any of the clubs that were interested in his services. The London club will once again look to offload him in the winter and AS Roma are a possible destination for the 29-year-old.
Mourinho’s team do not have much depth in their defence and they are keen on adding a fifth defender into the mix in the winter. Chris Smalling has been the mainstay of the Roma defence for a while now. But of late, he has been struggling with injuries and he is already 33.
On top of that, Roger Ibañez left the club in the summer and Evan Ndicka hasn’t had the kind of start he would have liked. As a result, the Portuguese manager feels they need to sign one more central defender.
Mourinho has worked with Dier back in the day when he was in charge of Spurs and he feels the 29-year-old could help bolster their defence in the short-term.
