Tottenham Hotspur might not be able to offload their 29-year-old utility man Eric Dier despite all efforts.

According to a report by The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to offload Eric Dier throughout the transfer window, but they have not succeeded yet. And, with just a few hours left, the 29-year-old utility man is likely to stay at the club for the 2023/24 season.

Dier came through the ranks at Sporting CP and made it to their first team back in 2012. After two impressive seasons, Tottenham Hotspur acquired his services. Since joining the North London club, the 29-year-old has gone from strength to strength.

He started off as a midfielder and a right-back. But over the years the England international has been used in multiple positions. And of late, Dier has been used as a central defender. The former Sporting CP defender has featured in a total of 361 matches for the London club, and he has even contributed towards 25 goals.

Last season, the 29-year-old featured in as many as 42 matches and was on the pitch for over 3,600 minutes. He was one of the first names on the team sheet last term, but a lot has changed over the past few months.

Just after taking charge of the club, Ange Postecoglou identified the fact that Tottenham needed defensive reinforcements. He did not want to trust someone like Dier heading into the new season. As a result, Spurs acquired the services of Micky Van der Ven.

The Dutchman’s arrival saw Dier fall further down the pecking order. The Australian manager’s first-choice centre-backs are van der Ven and Cristian Romero. Davinson Sanchez is the backup option alongside Ben Davies, who was used in a central role during the pre-season.

The 29-year-old has not featured in any of their matches so far this season. And, with Dier surplus to requirements, the North London club were keen on offloading him. Daniel Levy was desperate to get him off his books with his contract running out in less than 12 months.

But, despite having offered him to the likes of Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, amongst others, no deal has taken place so far. And, with the transfer window all set to end in a few hours’ time, Dier might end up staying at Spurs. The only way out seems to be a last-minute loan deal, but even that looks unlikely.
