Manchester United could consider selling €95 million signing Antony in the near future amid the winger’s off-field assault allegations.
According to Fichajes, Manchester United could wash their hands off Antony and look to sell the €95 million winger in the next window. There’s uncertainty over who would prefer to take the Brazilian from Old Trafford, as he continues to be a PR nightmare for the Red Devils amid allegations of assault.
The Antony assault allegations took a different turn right around the international break. Media reports have applied constant pressure on the player and Manchester United, forcing the club to release a statement that the Brazilian will not join up with the squad and has been given time to sort those issues off-field.
Add the Antony issue to that of Jadon Sancho’s spat with Erik ten Hag and Manchester United’s dismal start to the season; it’s been a PR nightmare for the club. Furthermore, the injury gods haven’t been kind to the club, as the fan base appears disgruntled.
Manchester United had only found some solution to another issue related to Mason Greenwood. At first, they indicated a contract termination, but at the end of the transfer window, they chose to send him out on loan to the Spanish side Getafe.
The move wasn’t welcomed by supporters who did not want Greenwood as part of their club. Now, Antony faces a similar backlash as those allegations broached an unpopular subject of violence against women and abuse.
These allegations have been rumbling in the background since the end of last year, and Manchester United briefly considered selling the 23-year-old attacker in the summer. With the €95 million winger looking increasingly like a bad investment for the club, they might take up the issue in the next window.
Manchester United had also planned strict disciplinary action if their internal inquiry revealed anything outwardly. Hence, the bigger picture shows that Antony’s future at the club is in danger of going south. Even if they decide to sell him, who are the takers for the underperforming, €95 million-rated 23-year-old attacker?
Manchester United are also considering selling Sancho if good offers arrive. If they do that with Antony, too, then Ten Hag will have a massive shortage of attacking options from January. In any case, the futures of those two promising talents at the club do look bleak, and so does the team’s in the larger context.
