Manchester United are interested in acquiring the services of the 24-year-old FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa.
According to a report by Fichajes, Manchester United are keen on having Diogo Costa in their ranks. The Red Devils’ new number one Andre Onana hasn’t been at his best since arriving at the club and his performances have forced them to look into the market for safer options. They believe the 24-year-old Portuguese international could do the job for them.
Erik ten Hag had a decent first season at Manchester United last time out. But, things haven’t gone according to plan for him so far in the 2023-24 season. They have lost three out of their five Premier League games and have conceded 10 goals while having scored only six.
Their major concern is the performance of their new goalkeeper Onana. The 27-year-old arrived at the club in the summer for a fee of €55 million to replace David de Gea who had left the club after his contract ran out.
The former Ajax goalkeeper was signed with a lot of expectations because of his heroics for Inter Milan last season. He was amongst the best shot-stoppers in Europe last season but things haven’t clicked for him since making the move to England.
He has featured in five Premier League games and has only kept a clean sheet in one outing. The 27-year-old has conceded 10 goals so far and a few of them have been because of his own errors.
United decided against renewing De Gea’s and went big to sign Onana as their manager Erik ten Hag feels he could help them play out from the back. But, unfortunately, the big-money move hasn’t worked in their favour and now they are planning to replace him by signing Diogo Costa from FC Porto.
The 24-year-old has been in sensational form over the past 18 months. He has gone from strength to strength and has also established himself as a regular in the Portugal national team.
While Costa’s contract at Porto runs until the summer of 2027, he could end up parting ways with them in the near future given the amount of interest in his services. Meanwhile, United are closely monitoring him and they could end up placing a bid worth €70 million according to the report.
The Red Devils want stability in goal and are willing to go big again to ensure they have enough competition for their number one spot. However, they are not the only ones interested in Costa, even Bayern Munich and Barcelona are keeping a close eye on him as they look for a long-term goalkeeping option.
