Chelsea reportedly retains an interest in Porto keeper Diogo Costa despite spending close to £40 million on two new stoppers in the summer.
According to 90 Min, Chelsea could revive their interest in Diogo Costa as they continue to keep tabs on the Poto star. The 24-year-old Portuguese international was the subject of intense speculation and admiration from Premier League sides but remained at his club.
Chelsea have had a complete overhaul of their goalkeeping department, as they signed two new stoppers during the summer window. They originally did not plan on such an outlay, but the late departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga prompted them to sign Djordje Petrovic.
Only sometime before that, Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton, and with Petrovic, they took their spending on new goalkeepers closer to the £40 million mark. If that wasn’t enough, there are reports suggesting they could continue searching for another stopper if the right name becomes available.
If that’s true, then there’s absolute uncertainty when it comes to first-choice keepers at the club. Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail also linked Chelsea with a move for Aaron Ramsdale after Mikel Arteta started David Raya in goal against Everton on Sunday.
There are other names like Mike Maignan and even England No.1 Jordan Pickford as other options to secure the starting spot. Now, the report states, the Blues are keeping tabs on 23-year-old Portuguese international Diogo Costa.
The Porto star was the subject of interest from Chelsea during the summer. Manchester United were also keeping track of the player before they signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan. With the Blues still linked with the 24-year-old Portuguese international, they could make a move in the future.
With Portuguese clubs, anything seems possible. Hence, a January move could also become a possibility. Chelsea have not had the best of starts to their Premier League season, winning only once in five games. Robert Sanchez has been decent, but maybe they want a more sturdy No.1.
Costa has certainly proved his worth with Porto and the Portuguese national team. He also has continental experience playing in the Champions League, which makes him a readymade keeper for any of the top sides. He certainly carries a large release clause in his contract, something Porto would want full value for.
Hence, any move from Chelsea will depend on the price point. The Blues are willing to invest big in the right players. And if the circumstances dictate towards signing the 24-year-old Portuguese international, they could execute that plan.
