Tottenham would not stand in the way of Hugo Lloris if the veteran keeper decided to stay at the club until January.

According to Ben Jacobs on Give Me Sport, Tottenham will no stand in the way of Hugo Lloris if the keeper decides to stay there in January. The French veteran failed to move during the summer window, and there have been talks of a contract termination, which may not happen after all.

Hugo Lloris has come under some pressure to leave Tottenham, either by a transfer or contract termination. The veteran star has fallen in the pecking order since the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli, who has taken over the No.1 spot with Fraser Forster, his deputy.

Ange Postecoglou seems satisfied with his options and does not count on Lloris to help this team during the season. There were plenty of links for the French veteran, with some reports on deadline day suggesting interest from Newcastle United and OGC Nice.

The Nice interest did turn out true, as Lloris confirmed it and explained his reasons for not joining the French clubs, where he started his footballing career. The Ligue 1 outfit had anticipated the arrival of the Tottenham star and terminated Kasper Schmeichel’s contract on deadline day.

As things stand, Lloris remains a Tottenham player, and the club will not stand in the way of their £100,000-a-week star if he decides to stay here. That means they will urge the Frenchman to find a new club in January, as per Ben Jacobs, who gave his two cents on the keeper’s situation.

Jacobs said, “If Lloris wants to stay at Spurs and not play until January, Tottenham won’t stand in his way. So, this is not Tottenham forcing Lloris out of the club. It’s Tottenham patiently waiting and determining where he truly wants to go. There’s been some interest in Saudi Arabia, but Lloris hasn’t bitten.”

“Newcastle were looking at Lloris, but they wouldn’t have been able to give him any gametime either. So, I think that Lloris has been a bit torn because he’s starting to realise, having been ever-present and integral to the Spurs project, that wherever he goes next may not come with gametime.”

“Tottenham also won’t come with gametime, and if he wants the gametime, he may have to drop down to a level or move to a place that isn’t one of his top preferences. I think that’s why it’s been so difficult.”

Lloris did have Saudi Pro League clubs probing for his signature. But with their window now shut, the only open one is over at Turkey. So far, Turkish clubs have not shown much interest in the Frenchman so far.

Tottenham’s situation is very frustrating as they hoped to find a solution for their long-standing keeper. Out of respect, they have decided not to stand in his way if he chooses to stay until January, but things could still change.

Tottenham might consider terminating his contract if Lloris receives and decides to take up a fresh offer from elsewhere. Free agents can still join clubs in Europe, but things seem very complicated at this stage for the £100,000-a-week star, who is into the last year of his deal.
