Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is likely to part ways with Tottenham Hotspur in January after an exit in the summer could not be possible.

According to a report by Football Insider, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will leave Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window. The 28-year-old was close to an exit in the recently concluded transfer window but a move couldn’t materialise.

Hojbjerg has been an important part of Spurs’ first team setup since joining them from Southampton back in 2020. The Danish international joined the London club after proving himself in the Premier League while playing for the Saints.

Over the years, he has featured in close to 150 matches for Tottenham and has contributed towards 26 goals. The 28-year-old has been a key figure in their dressing room over the past few seasons. Last season, he was involved in a total of 44 matches and was on the pitch for close to 3,900 minutes.

While Spurs fans expected him to remain an important part of their team, a lot has changed over the past few months. The arrival of Ange Postecoglou has seen the 28-year-old fall down the pecking order. The Australian boss doesn’t trust him to be his go-to choice in the midfield.

He prefers having Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in the midfield. And, with Rodrigo Bentancur expected to return from a long-term injury soon, the Danish international won’t have much game time at the London club.

As a result, a move away from the club in the summer would have been the best outcome for all parties involved. But, unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan. There was interest from Fulham as well as Atletico Madrid.

The Cottagers were ready to buy but he didn’t want to join them. Meanwhile, the Madrid-based club wanted to sign him a loan deal but Spurs were not ready to sanction such a deal.

In the end, the 28-year-old remained at Spurs. While fans and pundits are delighted to see him still at Tottenham, he is unlikely to have an important role.

While the transfer window in Europe is over, the transfer window in Turkey and Saudi Arabia still remains open. And, there is interest in his services from clubs of both countries.

However, Spurs are not looking to let him leave in an out-of-window move as they can’t secure a replacement. They do not want to end up being short in numbers in the midfield with Bentancur still recovering. As a result, a move to Turkey or Saudi Arabia has been completely ruled out.

Hojbjerg’s only way out seems to be a move in the winter transfer window. And, given the current situation of the 28-year-old at Spurs, he is likely to leave the London club in January.
